Dalam beberapa kes, pterygium dapat menutupi bahagian kornea. Penyebab dari masalah ini masih tidak diketahui, namun statistik menunjukkan bahawa lebih sering berlaku pada orang yang terdedah kepada cahaya matahari dan kerja - kerja di luar rumah. Pterygium biasa berlaku pada individu dewasa yang menjalani proses penuaan tetapi jarang berlaku di kalangan
