What is Age Related Macular Degeneration?

AMD is an eye disease that affects the macula caused by damages to the area around the blood vessels. This will slowly destroy the central vision, making it difficult to see, read or to drive. There are 2 types of AMD – dry and wet AMD.

  • Smoking
  • Aging – tends to affect individuals above the age of 55 years old
  • Family history
  • Excessive sun exposure

Age Related Macular Degeneration Signs and Symptoms​

  • Blurring and distortion of central vision
  • Sensitive to bright lights
  • Poor vision in dim places

Age Related Macular Degeneration Treatment

Dry AMD

  • In early stages of dry AMD, periodic check-up with an eye specialist to monitor is necessary
  • In advanced stages of dry AMD, there is currently no form of treatment which can prevent visual loss

Wet AMD

  • Laser treatment
  • Intravitreal injection
